Although the website didn’t help Maddie to push backwards in her family tree, it did provide a precise date of birth and further confirmation that she was indeed the correct person.

Next, Maddie went to the suggested Facebook profile page for Marsha. She could instantly tell that it was seldom used. However, after a couple of minutes spent mining the page, she had found one of her brothers, Raymond Klein, among her friends list. Raymond’s profile, thankfully open to the public, was very active and it only took Maddie twenty minutes of sifting through his timeline to find a selection of old family photos that he’d scanned, uploaded and shared with the world.

Maddie grinned as she opened a photograph of a small gathering of people, clustered around a central couple with their hands clasped around a knife that had evidently just been plunged into a cake. The caption provided by Raymond Klein was Mom and Pop’s golden wedding party, April 13, 1985. Below the caption he had added a who’s who of the featured guests, naming his parents as Joseph and Jayne Klein.

Maddie downloaded the photograph, added it to the family tree that she was building and then added their wedding date of 1935.

In a new tab, Maddie opened the 1940 U.S. Census, running a search for the Klein family by using the information that she had just obtained. She quickly found Joseph and Jayne, living with their two sons, Raymond and Terrence, in Newport, Rhode Island. She saved the information to the tree, then began to wade backwards through the various censuses and vital records, easily pushing the Klein family back into the nineteenth century.
